Black Duck’s products and services help developers optimize the application development process by fully leveraging the compelling economics of open source software. We improve development efficiency while mitigating the risks and challenges associated with open source software, including license obligations, security vulnerabilities, encryption export compliance and version incompatibilities and proliferation.
Mission: Enabling Multi-source Development with Open Source Software
Our mission is to help companies accelerate time-to-solution and reduce software development costs by providing the world’s best products and services for automating the management, governance and secure use of open source software in multi-source development at enterprise scale.
Vision: Developers as Super Integrators & Innovators
Black Duck envisions a day when developers are able to effectively use the vast universe of open source and focus their energies and expertise on innovation for strategic business value. In essence, they become “super integrators” who use open source and other code in a multi-source development process to create new applications and services faster, better and at lower cost.
History
In 2002 Black Duck started pioneering a way to automate open source software discovery and compliance management. Customers quickly realized the value of discovering unknown open source that had made its way into their code bases. It soon became clear that this was especially valuable early in the development process. Fixing design issues in development projects costs 10-100X less if done early versus late in the process. Furthermore, individual developers have realized significant gains in productivity and quality by using open source, but no one was helping enterprise development organizations to realize the same breakthrough economics, at-scale, in a managed and automated way.
Black Duck responded to this market need by building a comprehensive suite of solutions and services, focused on reducing time-to-solution and costs across the application development lifecycle. The Black Duck Suite supports the integration of open source with other code from the design phase of development all the way through implementation and deployment – an approach we call ‘multi-source development.’ From our early days in compliance we have evolved our offering to meet our enterprise customers’ needs for something very strategic: tools and services to support multi-source development across the application development life cycle.
